I did my summer internship from 20th of May 2015 to 25th of June 2015. One can also apply for internships and volunteering programs in their desired months after contacting them.

First day, first impression

I had visited the office a day before so as to know the exact location of the same. To my surprise it was a walking distance from my PG. The office is located in the colony of Lajpat nagar.

This was so because Udayan Care believes that the children should feel homely whenever they visit office. The office is sufficient for an intern to work.

On my first day, I arrived at the  office at 9:00 am as I thought I should be there as early as possible to create a good impression. As I was early, I waited for a while and other staffs came according to their office timings. Nothing major happened as it was my first day.

I was taken to the conference room where I was introduced to my mentor Mr Rahul sir who was there with me throughout my internship. I sat there in the coference room and saw the other interns, who were there before me, prepare for their presentation of their work at Udayan Care.

Also, I was given Udayan Care’s annual report to study so that I should have an idea of what Udayan Care did in the past year. My tasks started from the next day.

Main Tasks

My mentor asked me what kind of work I wanted to do. Being in my 1st year and having no knowledge about the kind of work to be done in an NGO for a law student, I asked him to give me those tasks which are law related. So, he basically asked me to study Juvenile Justice Act and then discuss it with him after 1 week.

He then told me to work on SOP’s i.e. Standing Emergency Provisions on emergency situations like if any natural calamity occurs at Children’s Shelter homes under Udayan Care then what steps would the children take to be safe. Also I was given a research work on comparison between Udayan Care and NGO’s abroad.

Also during my internship, I had to give a workshop on the topic of mt choice so as all the other interns would learn something new and it would be fun to do something different for a change.

This was compulsory for all the interns and the volunteers. At the end of my internship I had to compile my work and give a brief presentation of what I did during my internship.

Best things

My internship went well and everything was good there. If I have to talk about the best thing then probably visit to shelter homes would be the best thing in my internship. Interacting with children and spending time with them was very good.

Bad things

I could not find any bad things in the NGO. Everything went well.

As the NGO is situated in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi, I got a PG there itself, hardly walking distance from the NGO. There are many PG’s around, for boys and girls and one can find it up easily.
