Application Process
Send an email to the editor. Post this, there is an interview.
Duration of internship and timings
One month. Timings vary from day to day. In the first half of the internship, if you start by 9:00/ 10:00 am on a certain day, you will mostly likely get to leave at least by 6:00/ 7:00 pm. Second half, one starts only at about 4:00 pm.
You could then leave by about 7:00 pm or stick around till later (11:00 pm – 1:00 am) to watch the papers getting printed.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The office is quite nice.
On the first day, you are told who you are to report to. Interns at Times of India get their own desk, chair, computer and internet access.
Main tasks
The first of your internship is spent covering stories, going to press meets. Because I was a law student, they asked me to go watch case proceedings in the High court for a while and report those to them.
They give you complete freedom to cover small stories independently and publish a lot of them in the main paper itself. You cover actual news that is worthwhile.
The second half of the Times of India internship is spent with the editorial desk. There you edit stories that others have covered – stories from around the state and country.
There’s usually not much work for the interns after 7:00 pm but you are always welcome to stick around and learn the process behind the Times of India paper being published.
Work environment and people
The people are wonderful. They’re very friendly and approachable. Some of them take it upon themselves to mentor you.
Best things
The work itself. It keeps you busy the entire day and gives you a sense of satisfaction.
Bad things about the Times of India internship
None.
Stipend
