If there is anything which has been truly life changing for me, I believe it was joining USLLS. Back in the day I used to be something of an introvert- never taking part in any extracurricular activities, or any function of prime importance happening in school, always remaining in the shadows.
I took Commerce with Math in class 11th, thinking of following in my dad’s footsteps and becoming a CA. Soon, I realized, the subjects were the polar opposite to what I would consider as in my “forte”.
When my heart lay with subjects such as political science and history, I was busy engaging myself with Integration and Balance Sheets. Around the month of September of my board year then, I decided that the subject was definitely not my calling, and decided to do something, which according to me was where I belonged- law.
Boards approached, ended and the results were out soon. My results portrayed what I felt had been my entire past 5-6 years in school: mediocrity. Soon though, I managed to clear the entrance for IP and got into the main campus- I was thrilled! This was a new, fresh, clean slate.
Life in USLLS is something of a whirlwind– but whether you chose to be a part of this whirlwind is a decision entirely up to you. You could sit back and relax in this college for the entire period of 5 years going unnoticed- or you can be so active that almost every student and teacher knows you.
I had joined this college making sure that this time I would make sure I’m not sitting in the background becoming a mere spectator to what is happening around me- I wanted to be actively involved in anything and everything. This was in stark contrast to many of the other students who were a part of this college, having been actively involved in a plethora of activities in school.
The best part about USLLS is that it is going through an era of change- we had a brief period when due to various administration problems our college’s reputation went down.
However, in recent times we have started making active efforts to improve it. The most recent example being our recent 3rd Indraprastha National Moot Court Competition- I can honestly say that this was, hands down, the best experience I have had in this college till date.
This was one of the first times in life I was entrusted some responsibility, I broke out of my shell and interacted with so many people from both my college and other colleges, and met the most influential lawyers and judges.
We managed to get the best bench any college could possibly have gotten in the finals – Ms Justice Mukta Gupta, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri, Mr. Justice G.S. Sistani and Adv Mr. Sidharth Luthra (Snr.).
Another highlight, especially for me, in this college was becoming one of the founding members and now a Joint Secretary of our Debating Society. In my entire school life, I never once had an inkling that I had anything in me which allowed me to debate.
I developed this passion and love for debating which has been a truly enriching experience. As far as cultural activities go, we have an amazing drama society, music society, and even a dance society.
This college gives you opportunities, and it gives you the discretion to choose which one of these opportunities you want to utilize. Every student here is unlike the other- you’d see civil service aspirants, Judicial Services aspirants, Corporate Sector Aspirants, and those who want to be litigators.
In conclusion, USLLS is not one of those colleges who will spoon feed you; It allows you to stumble, fall, and learn from your own mistakes. “You can be anything that you want to be” sounds apt when you think about this colleges’ policy towards its students.
