National Law University (NLUJ) is one of the leading law schools situated at the vibrant and colourful city of Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The certificate course is designed for academicians, civil servants, non-government organisations, legal professionals, social workers and other related stakeholders who aspire to conduct research and publish in public policy.


Public policy reflects the intentions of government and government plays an important role in making and shaping of the economic policies. Hence Government occupies a prominent place in political debates and academic circles.

The recent examples of which are -demonetization of Indian currency and Goods and Service Tax. Public policy as a social science is based on the principles of economics, law and sociology but the present course aims to discuss the economic analysis of the government activities.

There is dearth of certificate courses on economic analysis of public policy in India. To bridge this gap National Law University, Jodhpur is offering a certificate course on economic reasoning behind public policy.

Free market fails to deliver efficient outcome in presence of externalities, asymmetric information, and imperfections in market structures and in provisioning of public goods. So there arises an economic justification of government in economic arena.

The course explores the rationale for public policy interventions in the economy and discusses the role of economics in the political process. It enables the students to examine the underlying economic arguments behind public policy choices.

It covers the debates regarding market efficacy, causes of market failure and hence state intervention in the economy.

The present course is broadly focused on evaluating the rationale for government intervention in the economy and the efficiency, incentive, and distributional effects of government policies.

It discusses the nexus of government and business through different economic policy like competition policy, labour market, and financial market and environment regulations.

The present course also enables to evaluate different public policies targeted to education, food security, and sustainable development.

It enables the students to evaluate the public policies and the causes behind the government failure and hence the scope of public private partnership is a welcome approach in the present context.

At the end of this course, the learners would be able to Understand the meaning and goals of public policy. Explain the economic functions of government and to build the strong rationale behind the economic intervention.

Apply the tools and principles of economics in the political process. Provide a conceptual framework to examine the efficacy of economic policy and to conduct the evaluation of different public policies targeted towards poverty and income support policies, food security, education and sustainable development.

Understand the causes behind the failure of government in achieving the desired goals. Discuss the growing importance of public private partnership.

Learners would get an opportunity to learn, understand, assess and polish their own skills and knowledge.

In this way the present course is designed to provide holistic learning through the scheduled lectures by resource persons of national and international repute for each of the five modules.

At the end of the course, learners would be evaluated on the following parameters and would receive certificate from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Law University, Jodhpur.

Thirty participants selected on First cum First Serve basis will have to pay a course fee of Rupees Ten Thousand only.

This fee will cover participation in the course, course material, and accommodation.

Once registered the fee shall not be refundable under any circumstances.
