The NIRF law college rankings for 2018 are out! The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD on 29th September 2015.

The law college rankings, released on April 3, 2018 have been curated for the first time.

While the whole initiative around ranking colleges by the government around fixed parameters needs to be applauded; at the same time, like most rankings, the whole exercise is fraught with blunders that make the rankings woefully incomplete. (See our verdict on the India Today 2017 rankings here).

But first-up, the NIRF rankings of law colleges for 2018:

  1. NLSIU Bangalore
  2. NLU Delhi
  3. NALSAR Hyderabad
  4. IIT Kharagpur
  5. NLU Jodhpur
  6. Jamia Millia Islamia Delhi
  7. NUJS Kolkata
  8. RMLNLU Lucknow
  9. Symbiosis Law School Pune
  10. DR. BR Ambedkar College of Law Vishakhapatnam

Here’s how you can use these rankings: All the above-mentioned colleges are ‘very good’ and safe-bets.

The rankings also reaffirm NLSIU’s numero uno position in the pecking order and NLU Delhi’s rapid rise in the circuit.

However, these are not the law school rankings anyone in the know of legal education would agree with. Why?

We don’t want to go into an analysis of the parameters used or even the specifics of the rankings, but we’ll give just one reason, which we’ll hope will be a cincher.

Only 71 colleges (out of nearly 1300+ law colleges in the country) participated in these rankings. The full list in alphabetic order is here.

NLIU Bhopal did not participate in the rankings and neither did GNLU.

Verdict: Useful initiative; but don’t trust it word for word, rank for rank.
