ABOUT THE CENTRE

The Centre for Constitutional Law, Policy and Governance works on foregrounding rights, rightslessness, and other vulnerabilities in understanding, critiquing, and reforming laws, legal institutions, and modes of governance, so that they reflect the constitutional ideals of justice.

The Centre works with governmental and non-governmental organizations on various research and policy initiatives. Recent collaborations include with the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee, The Law Commission of India, Lawyers Collective, Human Rights Law Network etc.

The Centre for Constitutional Law, Policy and Governance, NLU Delhi is seeking to hire a Research Fellow for the Centre for the “CLPG-CRR Project.”

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Centre for Constitutional Law, Policy, and Governance, and the Center for Reproductive
Rights, New York, are collaborating to publish a “Manual on Reproductive Rights.”

The aim of the manual is to provide a reference book for adjudicators, practitioners and students on important reproductive rights decisions, laws and international instruments.

Covering a range of topics, the book seeks to provide both a compilation of important judgments on each issue, as well as a brief critical overview of the decisions, to enable readers to locate the decisions within the framework of rights.

Additionally, the manual will include literature on global best practices in order to enable comparative learning.

The manual will have as its primary audience adjudicators who are called upon to decide reproductive rights cases. In addition, the manual will be of use to practitioners and students alike as a ready reckoner on issues relating to reproductive rights.

ROLE OF THE RESEARCH FELLOW

The Research Fellow will work with the Directors of the Centre in conceptualizing, researching for, and producing the manual.

This will involve extensive desk research on each of the topics identified, undertaking a comprehensive literature review on issues of reproductive rights, and case law research on decisions of the Supreme Court of India and of Indian High Courts, as well as leading/ best practice cases from other jurisdictions.

Work will also involve extracting the relevant portions from each of the cases, providing head notes for each and providing a critical overview of the development of law in that particular area, with the aim of locating the decisions within the broad context of a rights based approach to reproduction.

The Fellow will also be required to supervise the work of student researchers working on the project, assist the Directors in organizing events/workshops/conferences around the project and any other activities associated with the project.

The Fellow will also be expected to participate in other activities of the Centre, and undertake administrative responsibilities and institution building exercises at the Centre.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applications are invited from interested candidates holding an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in law. Candidates with demonstrable proficiency in issues relating to gender/reproductive rights will be preferred. Strong research and writing skills are essential.

Note that this is an entry-level position and would be ideal for individuals with 0-2 years PQE.

DURATION & REMUNERATION

The Fellow will be paid a monthly salary of Rs. 50,000 per month.

The position will be for a period of one year.

The selected candidate will be expected to join the Centre as soon as possible, and in no case later than October, 2017.
