Duration of Internship
4 weeks (01.12.2017 – 27.12.2017)
Timings: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM. However, due to the workload, one would leave office only by 8 – 8:30 PM.
I was living with my relatives in Dwarka, which is quite far from the office. However, there are multiple PG’s near Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand and Kailash Colony.
A plush office with a warm and friendly atmosphere. There are 3 partners and 5 associates. When I joined there were 3 other co-interns and 3 more joined during the duration of the internship.
Nature of Work
On my first day I was asked about my previous internships and my areas of interest and was told that, the office handles both civil and criminal matters and one can take work depending upon his/her interest. However, this does not mean that you will only get files that deal specifically with your areas of interest.
The office ensures that an intern gets a variety of work right from research on varied propositions, drafting Legal Notices and replies, Special Leave Petitions, Counter-Affidavits, Appeals, Replies to Arbitration Claims, various applications under the Code of Criminal Procedure, legal opinions, etc.
Apart from that one would occasionally be asked to do minor filings before various forums. Additionally, one is required to go to Court to attend matters he/she has worked on.
The primary areas of law I got to work on were: Arbitration, Contracts, Criminal and Evidence, Consumer, Environment, Service Law and certain aspects of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.
The biggest takeaway of interning at this office is that one gets to explore a plethora of matters at one go. During the initial phase of my internship, I was primarily working on a criminal trial in the stage of final arguments. Hence, interns assisting in this matter not only got to research and develop arguments but also got to attend briefings in which interns got to play a significant role.
The drafting that was given to the interns also was quite significant. Usually interns were given a free reign over their drafts and were encouraged to put forth their views.
While the Associates tried to ensure that all interns were provided with work, since there were 7 interns at one time, it is necessary that one is punctual and diligent in completing the work assigned to them, if they wish to continue to receive substantial work.
If one wants to learn the basics of trial court along with substantial drafting work related to the Higher Courts, this is a great office.
