Name. College. Year of Study
Name of the organization. City
Vaish Associates Mumbai.
Duration of the internship
2nd June, 2016 to 30th June, 2016.
How big was the office? Team strength?
Office was huge with a team strength of about 35 to 45 associates and 5 to 6 partners.
Application procedure. Internship contact details
Application procedure is simple and straight forward. We have to apply on this mail address: HR@vaishlaw.com which can be found on their website. One also has to fill in a short form on their website. They contact you within a few weeks.
The person who contacted me was Mr. Hemant Puthran (Partner). However, recently this has changed and some associate might get in touch with you soon.
Duration in weeks. No. of days/week. Timings
I interned for a span of four weeks, with working five working days a week. However, the second and fourth Saturdays are working. The associates may ask you to come on weekends in case you have work. One has to reach office by 10 a.m. and we can leave office by 8 p.m.
Accommodation: how, where, how was it?
I stayed at Mahim. The closest local station was Mahim which is four stations away from Lower Parel which is the closest station on the western line to the office. In case you stay on the central line Curry Road station would be ideal for your travel.
I stayed in a Flat which was shared by three other people. However, I had a room to myself. The flat was equipped with a water purifier, washing machine, and the rooms were furnished with a bed a table and wardrobes to store clothes etc. the rooms also had an AC, TV and a balcony.
The rooms were specious and a maid would come to clean the house every alternate day. Food was easily available through a tiffin service which charged sixty (60) rupees a tiffin and three hundred (Rs. 300) rupees delivery for a month. The washrooms were shared by all the flat mates.
The cost of the entire stay which is inclusive of electricity, and water is twenty thousand rupees (Rs. 20,000) per month. The flat is also conveniently located right across the local station and has pliantly of food joints at deliverable distances.
First impression. First day, formalities etc.
It’s not a place where one can afford to be late. It’s advisable to reach at least thirty (30) minutes in advance. The first person to interact with is Mr. Hemant Puthran (Partner). After which we are taken to our workstation. We are given the basic stationary and in a while an associate introduces us to the entire firm. That’s all on the formalities front.
Do not take it easy on the first day, they have plenty of work and you might as well get allotted it on your first day.
Main tasks include drafting client opinions, research, and assisting the associates with other tasks. I was mostly allotted drafting work which they take very seriously. There are firms that have a lot of work and then there are firms that value your work. This is the second type where your work is actually valued and seriously considered.
All interns interact regularly with the partners as well as the associates. There are intense feedback sessions from which one learns a lot. Depending upon what department you have been assigned would you get work. It is better to continue working with the person you have started to and only handle on assignment at a time.
Other tasks include maintaining records and FLA return filings. Interns also are asked to draft articles which would be published in the internal journals and new updates. It’s a complete law firm experience.
Work environment, people
The work environment is excellent, the office is well equipped and has all the enmities one needs. It has a well-equipped pantry with a fridge, coffee machine a microwave and an induction plate to heat food on. The interns have a separate room to themselves which ensures a good discussion among them at the same time giving basic privacy.
It’s an outstanding place if one really wants to learn and experience the firm culture. This place feels like family once you get used to the work there. The people are strict but at the same time know how to make the interns understand. They don’t expect the best from interns and understand that we make the mistakes.
However, they also strongly believe in teaching interns and guiding them through the tasks assigned.
The best thing would be free coffee, and the learning atmosphere created by the associates and the partners. I believe that every law school student should make it a point to intern at least once with this firm in their Mumbai office.
The only bad thing would be that, my internship came to an end. In case I did not have another internship planned would have enjoyed to work for another tenure of four (4) weeks.
What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues
There are food joints nearby where one can walk and have lunch. Colleagues are very approachable and you can hold a healthy discussion on a topic of your choice.
Anything else you’d like to tell
An internship which every law student should undertake.
Never be late to office and be punctual.
