I applied via a notice I saw on a website, inviting applications from students wishing to intern with them. It asked for your resume and a writing sample.
A few days later I was informed about my selection via mail and asked to join on the date specified.
Duration of internship and timings
11th May, 2015 – 8th June, 2015
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The office at R.K. Ashram Marg is small but not ill equipped. On the first day, we were introduced to our fellow interns and our supervisor Mr. Ravi Nair, who is also the founder of the organisation.
We were given files detailing the usual procedure to be followed by interns following which you were allotted a computer to work on in case you could not bring along a laptop of your own.
Each intern was typically allotted a project to work on which would be their task for the duration of the internship. You would usually collect information about that topic from various print and online sources and compile then into an article.
Sometimes you would even get to meet and interact with people from other organisations or people to whom the issue was of great personal importance to know their experiences regarding the issue at hand or the kind of data that they might have collated in the course of their work. We would at times attend events like press conferences which really were rather fascinating.
Work environment and people
The work environment was relaxed and informal. Once given our tasks we were given complete discretion as to how we were to go about it. Of course, any doubts we had would be promptly cleared by Mr. Nair. My fellow interns were really friendly and an absolute delight to get to know.
The impromptu discussions we had amongst ourselves or with Mr. Nair were nothing short of amazing.
So was the kind of food we could order for during lunch from Paharganj. That my fellow interns and Mr. Nair were just as much of a ‘foodie’ as I am was just the icing on the cake.
That we were allotted only one research topic to work on could possibly get monotonous at times, but that’s when our debates usually saved the day..
Always keep a backup folder of your data saved on cloud, especially if the computer you are working on is not your your own.
