First Impression, First Day Formalities, Infrastructure

I had to report by 9.30 a.m, after which I had to meet the HR head.

After a brief introduction she asked me if I had any particular preference, according to that I was assigned under an advocate.

They are quite strict about dress and the interns had to adhere to court room dress code.

I had been assigned under Ms. Soni Ojha who dealt with civil matters. I had been put in the office situated at 4 Fancy Lane, Kolkata.

It was a pretty spacious office spread across two floors. I was nervous the first day but after a while I eased in cause the environment at this office was very pleasant and welcoming.

Main Tasks

The kind of work assigned to interns completely depends on the senior under whom he or she is assigned.

There were also lot of readings and research assigned to me on various civil cases and DRT matters.

I even got a chance to go through a few criminal briefs. I had to summarize them, making a list of date and events.

I even got a chance to visit Consumer Forum for hearing of a case with my senior.

I even did some clerical work as well as typing out some letters for the advocates here.

Regular visit to the High Court to watch court proceedings was mandatory.

Work Environment, People

Advocates are really helpful.

Also, the senior under whom the intern is assigned will necessarily ask questions regarding the work assigned. Hence it’s quite an engaging procedure though there was not much pressure on me.Moreover my co-intern was my friend at it was great learning experience for the both of us as it was our first time interning at a law firm.

The people of the office were very forthcoming and helpful.

However one has to keep on asking for work as advocates keep juggling between court and office and your senior might forget to give you work.

Good Things

The amount of readings that are assigned to the interns is quite enriching. Also, the delicious evening snack that is served everyday is perfect refreshment after a tiring day of work.

Overall it was a good experience. It might not be tier-I firm but it gives a really good opportunity specially to those who are looking for a career in litigation.

Bad things

No such bad things that I noticed.
