I did my internship for 3 weeks. 15th December, 2014 – 2nd January, 2015
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
On the first day I reached the office at 9;30, which is the scheduled time to arrive. I was first made to sit at the reception as I was supposed to wait for Mr. Maxwell Chand, the Executive Assistant of the firm.
He guided me towards my desk and gave me an undertaking which was to be read and signed by all the interns. He introduced us to every associate and partner of the firm. As I was to walk around the office to meet the associates I saw that the office was very spacious. There are 2 floors and the interns are supposed to sit and work at the top floor.
We were shown the library, the conference room, the pantry and the cafeteria. the office also has a little terrace where you can go to enjoy the cool breeze if you are free.
The interns are mostly given research based work. They were mostly issue based research tasks although some times you would get fact based research where the lawyer would give you the fact scenario and you had to answer certain questions based on those facts.
The main areas of the S & R Associates Law Firm were Capital Markets, Corporate Law, M&A, Corporate Litigation and Arbitration. some of the research work included RBI Policies and implications on Non Resident transfers, SEBI guidelines pertaining to concepts such as promoter holdings, buybacks, control etc.
What the lawyers looked for were not pages of research and case laws, instead of it they looked for precise statements of the existing laws and how well one could answer the question asked. The focus always on the question that was asked.
Work environment and people
The workplace at S&R Associates was profoundly proficient and loose. When one was given work, one was relied upon to do it with all earnestness and constancy. Every note was investigated broadly by the lawyer and perpetually there were 2-3 drafts that should have been readied. I figured out that S&R works by the motto of perfection as they wanted every thing to be perfect.
The people at S & R Associates were extremely helpful and nice. And I mean associates, partners, support staff alike. The firm had an open door policy in that all the associates/partners who had cabins left their doors open for anyone to walk in and discuss anything. This was extremely helpful for interns.
There was an intercom near the interns desk from where one could order tea coffee or green tea from the pantry. For lunch, in case you didn’t get anything from home, there were a lot of places from where you could order.
The best part of interning here was that you can experience the professionalism in your college life itself. the way they work inspires u too to do the work with same enthusiasm and sincerity.
The associates used to give you the reviews of your work so that you could do well the next time.
There was nothing as such bad. the only bad thing was the time when you didn’t have the work and you have to face the boredom.

The biggest lesson that a law pursuant can learn is professionalism as a corporate lawyer. the associates inspired you to love your work and work with a whole lot of enthusiasm.
The office was not far away from my home so I stayed at home while I was interning there.
The office timings of the firm are 9:30 am – 6:30 pm. You have to reach the office at the correct time in the office and if you are very late you will be marked absent for the half day. But you have to stay in the office if their is some pending work. Mostly the interns are not asked to stay late if their isn’t any important work.
