Do not forget to mention the dates for which you would want to intern.
Duration of internship and timings
Duration of internship was 15 days.
Officially, the timings were 10 to 5. But it was pretty flexible.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
At the risk of sounding stereotypical, my first impression was “Oh no, a typical government office”. The building was in a dilapidated condition and the general atmosphere was a bit tardy. However, things have changed since then as the office has now shifted to INA.
First day Formalities: On the first day, we had a formal orientation session followed by a tour of the office. We were also issued temporary library cards.
We mainly had 3 main tasks:
First, we were allotted shifts for writing complaints in the “Madad” center. We helped the in-charge of the centre in writing complaints in Hindi.
Second, we were expected to submit a group project on any topic dealing with human rights.
Third, and the main task was to visit certain NGO’s which were involved with the issue of children in conflict with the law.
Work environment and people
Work environment was good. We were given freedom to go about our own tasks. People were also friendly.
Best thing was the central location of the office. Every happening place was just a metro ride away for us. 😛
1. Language issue. One of my friends from South India also interned with us. It was a bit problematic for her when most of the officials preferred talking in Hindi rather than English.
2. Very less work. Another problem was very less work and too many tea breaks. 😛
3. The most disgusting thing was our visit to the investigation cell where we were made to see a postmortem video.
The biggest lesson I received was that besides being interested in working, one needs to know how to earn people’s confidence and get tasks assigned for oneself.
Considering there was not too much work, we had to thing of innovative ways to get work and keep ourselves occupied. I believe that should be everyone’s strategy rather than blaming the office for not allocating enough work.
Any Other Thing
Preferably take up this internship with your friends. Its beneficial, considering the areas one has to travel to for reaching the NGO’s and the ample ‘free time’ you will get.
