Name of Organisation, Location, Team Strength
The Mediation and Conciliation Centre, Lucknow
I got it with the aid of an advocate I knew. However, the application process is very simple and you just have to come to the Centre (preferably with someone elder to you) and make a request for the same with the Head of the Centre.
Duration of internship and timings
My internship was for a period of 3 weeks. The timings were not very strict but we are expected to be present in the centre by 10.00 AM.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
The first impression was pretty good for me as I was a first year student back then and it was kind-of my first experience to witness the real-life disputes. The formalities included filing up a form and meeting the Head of the Centre and then you are good to go.
The infrastructure was not very appealing and looked much like a traditional government office.
The main task was to Sit, watch and observe. That is it. We were made to watch 4-5 Mediation proceedings everyday. Sometimes they would be fun and the tempers in the chamber would soar high but there would be times when it would get really boring.
The nature of cases that were referred to Mediation were basically Matrimonial and after a while the internship became a bit monotonous.
The only exciting parts of the internships were when the Mediators would ask us to ask questions from the clients or to suggest a solution.
Work environment and people
The work environment was relaxed. No real pressure and the Mediators were totally chilled out.
Every 1 out 3rd Mediator will ask you the difference between Arbitration, Mediation and Conciliation. They will also ask you the statute which governs the Mediation Procedure in India.
Be ready with the answers for these questions if you wish to intern here. Best things The best thing was witnessing real Mediation Proceedings and sometimes being given a chance to even interact with clients.
The relaxed work environment and the helpful mediators helps you especially if you are in your first year.
Not advisable for people above First Year as sitting and observing might (read: will) get BORING after a certain point of time.
It is very difficult to bring the two disputing parties to a mutually agreeable settlement but the way in which some mediators carried out this task was commendable.
The patience and understanding displayed by the Mediators is something that I learned from this internship which has served me well till day.
Any Other Thing
This internship is not for people above First year.
For the first years, this might be a good chance to have the first taste of law and the legal world.
