Duration in weeks. No. of days/week. Timings
I interned at Kocchar & Co. for 4 weeks, it was working 5 days a week but occasionally the team used to come on second Saturdays depending on the senior partner’s requirements pertaining to a matter which required special attention.
The timings were 10 am to 6:30 pm and can extend if an urgent matter was there, but the team is considerate enough to let the intern choose whether to stay or not.
First impression. First day, formalities etc.
First day was mainly filling up of documents, introduction with the team under whom you are going to intern and all relevant information regarding DO’s and Don’t’s.
My first impression was “WOW!” the office looked amazing, there were so many associates and other partners. You get an adrenaline rush when you see a law firm of such high scale.
My main tasks were related to legal research on books and softwares, drafting various documents and specially reply to a legal notices coupled with various court visits and mediation and arbitration matters.
If you insist they let you read the case files and see the court arguments pertaining to that case.
Work environment, people
The people are very friendly and professional at the same time. If you ask them queries they respond with enthusiasm and will assign you quality work.
The work environment is not stressful as such, and you thoroughly enjoy your time sipping a delicious Cuppa by the pantry staff. Silly mistakes are not taken lightly by them but rest assured you will learn a lot coupled with sarcastic leg pulling!
Best things and Bad things.
The best thing about the Kocchar and Co. internship is the fact that you get to go to the court a lot and attend several arbitration and mediation proceedings. The quality of work is good for someone who wants have an initial feeling of a law firm experience coupled with an exposure into the legal framework.
You get an opportunity to draft, and the associate working over you addresses your conundrums and provides solutions. The only bad thing is that I live in another part of the city and therefore, commuting to jasola wasn’t easy but due to the proximity with the metro station there wasn’t any such problems.
You should try out several food joints near the vicinity if you cant eat Pizza hut, Dominos and sub ways each day.
What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues
I am from Delhi so I traveled by metro. All of us, i.e. the interns used to have lunch everyday in a new dhaba (food stall). There are many such shops inside the Patiala House Court Complex.
There is also a Coffee Day Express Retail outlet which used to give excellent Ice -Tea. Khan Market is also nearby and there we went to Big Chill to have Honey Chilli Potatoes and Khan Chacha to have Paneer and Chicken Rolls.
Accommodation etc. What did you to do chill in and around the office and the place of stay?
I stay in Delhi so accommodation wasn’t necessary. We used to go to neighbouring building to chill in food joints like pizza hut, dominos, subways, CCD and many other pastry shops along with road side food joints for Rajma Chawal, Kadi pakoras and sometimes the next building in the wine and beer shop for celebrations whenever someone’s internship began or ended.
