Duration of internship and timings
My internship was in the Month of November, 2013.
Timings are from 9:30 am to 6 pm, but the intern may stay back till 8 pm to finish off pending work. After that the lights go out.
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
Khaitan & Co. Kolkata is the oldest law firm in Kolkata. The building looks imposing on the outside and true to its name, is emerald green in colour.
The interns may sit on the ground floor or on the 2nd floor, depending on who the intern is working with. The ground floor handles corporate matters; the first floor, IPR and Tax; and the 2nd floor is the Litigation Department.
The first day you are introduced to Mr. R.N. Jhunjhunwala, widely considered as the Godfather of interns at the Khaitan Kolkata office. He is an extremely helpful and approachable person.
Mr. Jeevan Ballav is directly in-charge of interns, who then guides individual interns to mentors depending on the interns’ field of interest in law.
I was working in the IPR and Taxation Departments and worked on Copyright and Trademark Laws. Prepared extensive Client Profiles for the firm.
I also researched the provisions of the Central Excise Act, 1944, Customs Tariff Act, 1975 and West Bengal Value Added Tax Act, 2003 and Rules, 2005 and drafted Oppositions and Appeals under Section 84-86 of the Act.
Work environment and people
It’s a great place to work in, with excellent internet connectivity and a plethora of books to research from. I had real fun working in the office.
The people are friendly and helpful, and Shibu da in the office brings tea twice a day with a scowl on his face and a song in his heart.
