Fox and Mandal (Solicitors & Advocates), Kolkata.
The firm is situated right next to the High Court at Calcutta. It is about a couple of minute’s walk away from the main Judge’s entrance to the High Court. The exact address would be 12, Old Post Office Street, Kolkata- 700001, India.
The person in-charge of the interns at the Kolkata branch, is Ms. Swati Agarwal.
Her contact details are as follows:
One may mail their updated CV to her about two months before they wish to apply for their internship. If there is no response, one may follow up about a month before they wish to intern at the firm.
Usually, there are no hassles in getting through the desired acceptance mail for the internship.
Duration of internship and timings
According to Bar Council of India (BCI) rules, a student has to intern for a minimum of twenty-one days for each internship. My internship spanned from June 30th, 2014 to July 28th, 2014. Weekends are not working days!
First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure
On my first day, I reached the office at around 9:00 am. I was made to wait by the receptionist at the lobby. I waited for about half an hour when Ms. Agarwal walked into the office. After the receptionist introduced me to her, Ms. Agarwal took me for an office tour.
I met various associates before finally meeting Mr. Mandal (the managing partner). He was very warm. He gave me an insight as to what Fox & Mandal is all about and what they expect from me. Which was very simple, I was to work as a researcher and accompany different associates to the Court.
Like Mr. Mandal aptly puts it, as an intern, one has to mainly work as a researcher on various corporate and civil issues. Brief the associates about the research, and accompany them to the courts if one wishes to
Work environment and people
Fox and Mandal is undisputedly one of the oldest firms in the largest democracy in the world. It has wide repute across the country. However, unlike one’s expectations, the work ethics at the firm is slightly laid back. To my surprise, even though I asked for more work, I was usually free by 4:30 pm.
Keeping all this aside, people at the firm are really nice. They are warm, and very approachable. Associates are more than welcoming to clear your doubts and to advice you on various issues with regard to your career as a lawyer.
The location of this firm with regard to other important firms in Kolkata, and the High Court is the best thing. Since all the major firms are situated in close proximity, an intern may interact with various other lawyers and/or other interns who come out for lunch in the neighborhood.
This helped me in networking and meeting different people during the period of my internship. One shall learn over the years in this profession, that networking is a very important tool in the lawyer’s life.
Nothing as such.
Interns are given a stipend of Rs. 1,500 at the end of the internship period.
