Name of the organisation. City. Office Address. How was the office? Team strength.
O. P. Khaitan and Co. New Delhi. Defence Colony. The office is an old home, turned into a firm, so the exact number of partners and associates is unknown to me.
Application procedure? Internship Contact Details
I applied on my own, to email id, email@example.com . They responded themselves. All other interns were fourth years.
Duration in weeks. Days of work per week. Timings.
4 weeks. 6 days. Only second Saturday is off. Timings are 10 am to 6 pm.
First impression, first day, formalities
First impression was of grandeur, till you move away from the ground floor, then you leave all impressions of a fancy law firm behind.
My end terms examination were going on and I only got free November 10, 2012 and Diwali was scheduled to be on November 13, 2012. They had fixed my internship for a period of November 01, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Since I was unable to make it on November 01, 2012, I responded stating my reasons. I did not get an instantaneous reply.
However, after numerous calls and one lady rejecting my application after being accepted, and blaming me for not being there on time, they finally shifted it to November 15.
I was in the litigation department at O.P Khaitan, and was given almost no work, till other advocates started giving me work on their own.
Main task was research.
Most days there was no work for interns, however when there was, it was in a decent amount. Most of the work that I got, was from two advocates, who were supposedly working on Real Estate matters.
I also got interesting work in between to do with adoption, matrimonial matters and prevention of corruption act.
Work environment, people
Work environment for chilling out is awesome, if you are looking for an internship which has Defence Colony right next door (which means great food, bars, shops) and lunch is something you like taking, this is it.
Certificate story: I was lucky that my certificate got signed and stamped by a clerk, all the other interns had massive scrutiny on their certification, with most work done by them modified or deleted.
Interns at OP Khaitan are seated next to their accounts department and all the other clerks of the office, and there was talk and gossip through the day about the news of India and their personal experiences of life.
Funny thing: while working with a real estate advocate on a matter of partition and inheritance of an estate of a HUF, the advocate queried, I quote: “You know the lines thing, in Hindu law? I get very confused about the lines thing!“.
After an extremely long discussion about the ‘lines’, they turn out to be the principle of degrees of descendants eligible to inherit.
The best things AND the bad things
Best thing: Defence Colony Market
Bad Things: When I was interning there was no access to Manupatra. No access to SCC Online. For interns, they had one Hindu Law Book, Mayne and that too an edition of 2006.
In an office spanning 4 floors, even the clerks think that interns work for them.
If you have to get a book, you may call the clerk to find the book but go all the way from the basement to where the clerk is sitting to get the book and this process may be repeated upto 2-3 times a day depending on whether he has the book or not.
Even for cutlery to eat food, you have to repeat the same process.
Participate in our summer internship experience writing competition with a total prize money of Rs. 48,000.
