Duration of internship and timings

I interned for 4 weeks.

I was the only intern. I’d reach office by 9:30 Am. I’d leave around 5:30 PM.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

Very sweet little firm. They have very high standards of ethics and I was lectured on their basic principles. This continued on a daily basis.
I had my own desk. They use two floors of the building. They have a nice kitchen and the clerk makes very nice tea.

Main tasks

I was made to research into the cases being handled. This meant a lot of property law, cheque bouncing, Constitutional Law etc. I also prepared summaries and case details to help out the partner. I also accompanied the lawyers to court.

Work environment and people

The partners are very nice and let me get on with my work without breathing down my neck. They kept telling me to come back as an associate to really understand the complexities of the law. The associates are also very helpful and took me with them to court.

Best things

It was a nice chilled out lil firm; I ran a little wild though.

Bad things

There were no bad things, only that there wasn’t much work and that I was the only intern.

There was no stipend. I don’t think I deserved one though, truthfully speaking =P

Biggest Lessons

Being my first internship, this experience was an eye-opener. I got a sneak peak into the life of a lawyer. The court visits, counselling and general work helped me immensely.

They have embedded in forever the idea that a lawyer has great power and a duty to serve. And that money isn’t everything.

It was also pretty amazing to hear their clients gushing about them.
