Internship Experience @ Kanga and Company, Mumbai: Draft Winding Up Petitions

Name of Organisation, Location, Team Strength

Kanga and Company, Mumbai, 6 associates working under one partner.

Application Process

You need to apply well in advance because they have lots of articled clerks working with them so place maybe bit of a constraint.

Duration of internship and timings

6 weeks, October-November 2013.

Monday-Friday 10 am to 8 pm.

Alternate Saturday working.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

On the first day one of the associates took me around the entire office and introduced me to my core team as well as all the others.

They were very organised and my computer and network was preset.

They have a state of the art office right at the center of Fort and it is spread out over two floors- one for litigation and the other for corporate.

Main tasks

My main tasks involved researching on various topics and preparing case summaries.

I was taught how to draft winding up petitions after which I was given to draft a couple by myself which I had to then get approved by an associate.

I was also asked to assist Sir’s junior so I could know what exactly are the ancillary documents that need to be drafted and filed for court proceedings. I also assisted in drafting bye-laws for an upcoming club in the outskirts of the city.

I also had the golden opportunity of attending arbitration proceedings which were carried out at the World Trade Centre, Cuffee Parade.

During my tenure of 6 weeks, 2 sessions were conducted by our council was Mr. Zal Andhyarujina. (During one of our conferences at Mr. Andhyarujina’s office, I was also lucky enough to meet Mr. T.R.Andharujina.)

Work environment and people

The people at Kanga are wonderful to work with.

All the associates are extremely helpful and very friendly.

One of the senior associates was more of a guide.

She was so keen to teach and would give me work every time I approached her.

Everyone including the partners would sit and eat lunch together in the conference room.

Best things

Other than the associates and all that I learnt, kanga was very centrally located.

Lots of good food joints and a starbucks is barely 200 mts. away.

They even allow you to get food delivered to office during lunch hours!

Also, all the partners are very approachable.

They are also very flexible and accommodating should you face any difficulty.

Bad things

The receptionist who though it was always ok to shout and talk to everyone and also engage in conversations on the phone for the longest time.

Depending on your year of study, it varies from 2000-3000 rupees.
