Name of the organization. City
Ganesh & Co, Mumbai
Duration of the internship
1st to 28th December
How big was the office? Team strength?
The office was not too big but that didn’t matter as the team strength was 7 in total, 2 partners and 5 associates.
Application procedure. Internship contact details
I had a friend who had interned there previously which made the application procedure a lot easier. You can send a mail to [email protected] or [email protected] with a cover letter and CV to apply for an internship. They reply promptly.
Editor’s note: Do NOT email your CVs to the above email IDs en masse. Your application will probably land in the bin. First, see if you really want to intern here. If yes, then apply with a tailor-made CV and cover letter.
Duration in weeks. No. of days/week. Timings
I interned for 4 weeks. They are working on Saturdays and expect the interns to come in as well. Timings are 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM but that depends on the work assigned to you. There were days when I stayed back till 8:45 and days I could leave by 6 PM.
Accommodation: how, where, how was it?
I stayed at the Naval Girls Hostel in Colaba, as my father is in the Armed Forces, so accommodation was never a problem.
First impression. First day, formalities etc.
On my first day I arrived at 9:30 AM and was the first one there. The legal clerk was very friendly and showed me around. The office was not too big but well furnished. By around 10 the office was bustling.
Being my first day I was asked to accompany an associate to the High court to view the proceedings. In the evening I was called in by the partner who asked me about my interests and the sort of work I was looking to do which completely put me at ease.
The main tasks that I had to do –
Research on various provisions of law according to the various matters that came up, be it the Indian Contract Act, Criminal Procedure Code, Civil Procedure Code, Arbitration and Conciliation Act etc.
Worked on arbitration matters and attended arbitration proceedings.
The best part of the internship was that I got to work on a case on maritime law.
It dealt with the arrest of a ship and I had to check the account statements of the ship, research and look up case laws which I thoroughly enjoyed.
The associate I was under was kind enough to give me a general introduction to maritime law before I started working on the case which made the work assigned to me a lot easier.
Work environment, people
The work environment was what I loved best. Everyone is extremely friendly and approachable. The associates are really nice and are always willing to help.
The amazing cutting chai that you can call for from office at any time of the day. They also have this system of ordering in sandwiches and bhel in the evenings for the whole office which I would happily snack on.
What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues
The office is situated right on top of Jimmy Boy’s Restaurant and was five minutes away from the High Court, so there were plenty of eateries to go to.
