First impression, first day, formalities
Ms. Kanika (H.R) welcomes the new interns and hands them over an Internship Form, a notepad and a pen.
I was immediately allotted a Partner as my mentor whom I eventually met after few hours and I got work from the very first day. My first assignment dealt with Rules and procedure for private placement under the Companies Act, 2013.
There is a list in the library with telephone extensions of each and every Associate and one phone near the computer systems is for interns at which Associates call up to contact a particular intern or ask for free interns.
One big lesson I learnt on the first day was to carry a laptop and a working dongle due to availability of only 2 computers with legal databases like Manupatra and SCC.
Initially interns didn’t have a fixed place to sit but after few days we were shifted to library.
I was given research work from my mentor and at times from other managers, associates and senior associates in the following areas:
a. Rule and procedure for private placement under the Companies Act, 2013.
b. Case law on comparison between liquidated damages and actual damages.
c. Provision pertaining to FDI Policy of India.
d. Provision pertaining to dormant company.
e. Prepared draft resolution, etc.
It is a common thing for interns to approach Associates in both litigation and corporate departments for work and most likely all of them happen to have some work for you.
The advantage of not restricting myself to one Associate or one dept. was getting a variety of work in Companies Act, Customs and Excise, Stamp Act, Taxation Law, Food Safety and Security Act etc.
The research work was always time bound and really interesting. Learning is an important aspect of your internship as Associates might give you research notes to prepare on topics they’d like you to know about for your own benefit.
I was given some clerical work at times such as typing documents, comparison of documents etc.
Work environment, people
Work environment is comfortable and motivating. Associates are friendly and very helpful. One can prove their mettle and make a place for themselves with consistent good work without delays, that’s the only way to get yourself more qualitative work.
Other staff is pretty helpful too. There are two pantries where one can get unlimited coffee/tea/green tea.
The best things AND the bad things
Best: Qualitative work, friendly Associates, comfortable work hours, location of the office and unlimited coffee!
Bad: Only 2 system to work so you need to carry your own laptop.
Accommodation etc. What did you to do chill in and around the office and the place of stay?
I stayed at my place and used the metro to commute. Nearest metro station Gurudronacharya Metro Station which is just a 5 minutes’ walk away.
Interns have a huge variety of food joints in Global Business Park area to try during the lunch time. There were many stalls a few steps away from the building.
