College: School of Law, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar
Year: 5th Year
Duration: 14th July to 22nd August, 2014 (six weeks)
My internship at Amarchand has been one of my best internships till date. Ideally one should apply for an internship there two months prior to the month desired for internship. Follow up is a must.
One can mail their CV and a decently written cover letter at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. I had got through an internship at the firm by applying on the aforementioned email address. I was putting up at my relatives place at Greater Kailash which is at a 15 minutes distance from the office.
Amarchand Mangaldas has a huge office which is named “Amarchand Towers” located in Okhla. It was a Monday and the interns were asked to report at 10:00 a.m. On the first day of the internship, as soon as I reached the office, I was asked to report on the second floor.
When I reached the office I was directed to be seated in one of the rooms named “Aristotle”. This reminds me that the office had conference rooms with fancy names like the one I just mentioned above. Amongst others were “Madame Marie Curie, Karl Marx and few others had names of games such as Chess and Sudoku!
The other interns were also seated in the same room. There was an unusual and uncanny silence in the room as I seated myself amidst the other co-interns. After a wait for around half an hour, the in-charge of the HR Department, entered into the room with a very welcoming attitude and gave us a sheet of paper where each one of us had to fill in certain important details about ourselves which included your name, name of the college, CGPA, Rank in class and also the choice of area one wished to work in during the tenure of the internship.
For example: some of us wished to intern with the litigation and arbitration department, few others wanted to intern with the IPR team and the rest with the general corporate team.
Thereafter, the HR conducted an orientation session for an hour where we were shown a power-point presentation on the firm and we were also briefed about the rules and regulations to be followed by the interns.
On the completion of the presentation, the HR collected the documents that we were asked to carry with us on our first day, after which she gave each one of us an intern batch to be compulsorily worn throughout the day.
Thereafter, we were allotted specific teams according to our preference stated in the sheet of paper given to us. The HR was an extremely friendly and approachable woman. She took each of us to our respective teams and also introduced us to the entire team.
There were different areas on each floor of the office where the interns were made to sit. The atmosphere at Amarchand was extremely friendly and the associates are very helpful. I was allotted a team which mainly dealt with general corporate matters including real estate matters, labour law and competition law. The tasks assigned to me mainly involved research work.
The office of Amarchand has an absolutely swanky and posh building of four floors consisting of a basement, a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor. The basement area comprises of the library and cafeteria. The library at Amarchand is simply marvelous! It was one of the biggest attractions for me!
There were around 300 associates approximately working there. The firm has an excellent canteen on the second floor, however the sad part was that it was purely vegetarian! (a note for non-vegetarians) and the best part was that it is open 24*7. So on days when one had to stay late at night for completing pending work, a solution to hunger is always available. Nevertheless, the canteen made delicious Maggie!
My internship lasted for a period of six weeks (14th July to 22nd August) wherein the experience I gained was invaluable! The associates in my team were extremely friendly and helpful. They were always ready to help me whenever I had a doubt with any work that was assigned to me.
There were times when I did not possess any prior knowledge on a research given to me and I had to begin understanding the topic from scratch in order to deliver the accurate result required from me. In such circumstances, I received immense help from my team wherein they briefed me about the topic and also shared with me the appropriate resources where I would find the relevant materials regarding the topic.
Undoubtedly, all this made my internship a memorable and learning experience. To add onto all this, I had a brilliant group of co-interns with whom I had built quite a good rapport. However, one of the bad things there were the extremely slow computers which required a great amount of patience to be dealt with. I did not find any other negative points regarding the firm.
Stipend: No Stipend
Interning at Amarchand has been one of my greatest experiences which has helped me boost my confidence. It was a great learning experience for me!
