About the Conference
The purpose and benefit of criminal law in a society is manifold. Maintaining order, resolving disputes, protecting individuals and property, providing for smooth functioning of society and safeguarding civil liberties are some of the important purposes for which criminal law stands for. It is, therefore, rare to find a country without criminal law and criminal justice system.
The changing social needs, priorities and preferences of people, and new technologies are factors responsible for the change in both content and substance of criminal law. Criminal law in India is in a state of flux and it’s contours have been constantly evolving both in substance as well as the way it is implemented.
The recent development in criminal law result in boarding of the areas of substantive law and more narrowing of the scope of procedural safeguards through special laws. The amendments to the Indian Penal Code 1860, The India Evidence Act, 1872 and The Code Of Criminal Procedure, 1973, with respect to the Criminal Justice System reflect the finer balance between effective crime control and individual freedom.
However the interest of the victim of a crime has not been adequately emphasized. This national conference is meant for a meaningful discussion and debate. The outcome of the conference could propose suggestions regarding effective and smooth functioning of Criminal Justice System.
