IFIM Law College, established in the year 2015 is making fast strides in the horizon of legal education. The Centre of Excellence on Consumer Laws which was set up in the year 2016 is a complete student run body functioning under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Shivani Dutta, Faculty Coordinator with an avowed objective of creating awareness about various consumer laws and rights of the consumers.
Even though it is in its infancy the Centre has been active by successfully organizing many Guest Lectures and Workshops justifying the very purpose for which it has been established.

Consumer Empowerment is more important than consumer protection. Every consumer needs to have a basic comprehension of the legal rights and responsibilities so as to make an informed decision about purchase of goods and services.
CUTS International defines right to consumer education as “The right to consumer education means the right to acquire the knowledge and skills to be an informed consumer throughout one’s life. The right to consumer education incorporates the right to knowledge and skills needed for taking actions to influence the factors which affect consumer decisions”.
The UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection lays emphasis on consumer education. The guidelines impose an obligation on governments to develop or encourage development of general consumer education and information programmes, bearing in mind the cultural traditions of the people concerned.
This course is designed with the purpose of enhancing consumer education and awareness among the law students and young advocates on the theoretical and practical aspects of consumer protection law.
This course will help you understand who is a consumer in the legal perspective, what is consumer complaint, definition of goods and services, and the various issues that arise in Business-to-Consumer transactions, who can file a consumer complaint and the manner of escalating a consumer complaint.
Consumer confidence primarily involves two convictions – that the consumer will get what he expects and if things go wrong, the consumer can seek a remedy. This course will also help you understand about the grievance redressal agencies in India and the basic procedures involved in filing a complaint, remedies available to a consumer under Consumer Protection Law and other related enactments governing consumer protection.
Case studies in real life scenarios will illuminate the applications of consumer protection law, enabling you to explore the relevance of the subject to your own professional and personal circumstances, and legal jurisdiction.
