The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by the world leaders at a historic UN Summit in September 2015.
The ambitious Agenda consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 Targets and addresses the five critical areas of people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership.
The Goal 16 of the SDGs urges all to “promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all level.”
Goal 16 represents a breakthrough in thinking amongst the global development community, in the acknowledgement of the fact that global development goals, like eradicating extreme poverty, ensuring healthy lives, providing quality education, empowering woman, etc. can never be fully realized unless there is a strong emphasis on peace, governance and access to justice.
There is a need to focus on to the hitherto less explored but promising facets of Goal 16 that become clearly discernible only when we look at access to justice and Goal 16 targets through new lenses representing the perspectives of say those belonging to vulnerable groups or those caught in intersectionality of discriminations.
The meaning, content and consequence of a particular aspect of Goal 16 target or access to justice may vary greatly according to the social experiences and position of the subject in her immediate vicinity.
With this purpose in mind, Centre For Social Justice, Ahmedabad is organising an essay competition for students of law and other social sciences.
1. Evaluating Goal 16 through a gender responsive lens
2. Discrimination based on identity (caste, religion) and Goal 16
3. Realising Goal 16 in India: Engaging with stakeholders
