Duration of Internship and timings

1st August, 2016 – 8th September, 2016

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

The office runs smoothly even though the infrastructure isn’t that well organized. But the officials manage to do their job with the resources they are provided with.

On my first day, I met Tapan Barooah Sir who guided me through the formalities and made me feel comfortable within no time. There was no such thing like I was to be treated like an outsider.

Sir was very generous and approachable whenever I had any doubt regarding the provisions. In fact he gave me a detailed explanation of the provision and how the Commission works.

He provided us with certain booklets for reference.

Main tasks

The main task which was allotted was to analyse cases that took placed within a specific time frame, to pinpoint if there were any anomalies while dealing with those cases, if at all there was any noncompliance of provisions on the part of the commission.

And finally I had to make a report out of it.

Also I had to make a list of cases that were filed and resolved by the commission.

The Commission had also conducted a seminar at our college NEF Law College, for which I was asked to write a report.

All the above were to be included in the final report.

Work environment and people

The work environment was sober. It was not noisy. The staff was well maintained. They were organized and helpful.

I had interaction with few of the staff members. Their approach was warm and well coming. So it made the internship process easier.

Best things

The ambiance of the office was apt for an intern to learn and all the doubts could be cleared either by Tapan Sir or you could also approach the Chairperson.

The chairperson is a very friendly and warm personality who encourages young minds and does a lot of interaction.

Bad things

The monotony of the regular office would sometimes make it appear a boring task to go through cases.

Stipend

No stipend

Biggest Lessons

The biggest lesson which I learned was :

There’s a vast difference between the rights that are promised and the actual application of those provisions. When it comes to application of those provisions, the exceptions provided make it more or less seem like that there is denial of justice to certain cases; if not all.

There are human rights violations which take place but the commission has no authority over it.

So the actual justice is still a distant dream as the power of commission is merely advisory in nature. It doesn’t has a binding effect in real.

Any Other Thing

It was a fine experience as an intern at the commission.

But it also glared the fact that human rights violations still go on under the buckles of the armed forces and officials. There’s not much that can be done about it.

Accommodation

I am a localite. But offstation students can stay in a PG or rented rooms in the GMCH road which would cost around Rs.5000 including all facilities with no extra charges.

Off station students can contact in this PH no. 9957460931 for PG which is located at a walking distance from the Commission.

Office Timings

The office timings were from 10 am till 5 pm. The morning half was strict whereas the second half was comparatively a bit relaxed.
