First impression, first day formalities, Infrastructure
On the first day, I was introduced to the trustees and staff of PCGT.
Since my area of interest was RTI, I was briefed by Mr. D. S. Ranga Rao (former officer of the Intelligence Bureau who heads the RTI Cell of PCGT) about the role of PCGT in assisting the citizens, especially the downtrodden, in filing RTI applications.
Mr. Rao then asked me to go through the RTI Act 2005 and prepare a draft RTI application.
During my internship, I got an opportunity to draft and file RTI applications and attend RTI hearings at various government departments, including the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, the Office of the Charity Commissioner and the Bombay High Court Registry.
I also conducted research on different sections of the RTI Act and the relevant case law.
I attended Weekly Trustees’ Meetings and had the privilege to work under the guidance of Mr. Julio Ribeiro (Founder Trustee) for the Youth For Governance campaign and Mr. S. S. Puri (Trustee) for the RTI campaign in the second and third month of my internship, respectively.
Towards the end of my internship, I wrote and presented a short research paper on “A Decade of RTI as a tool for good governance” at the Weekly Trustees’ Meeting.
Work environment and people
The trustees and staff of PCGT are extremely amicable and supportive. The overall work environment is such that I looked forward to coming to work everyday, one of the primary reasons why I extended my internship for another three months.
Interning with PCGT gives you a first hand opportunity to work for transparency and accountability in governance. PCGT has an esteemed Board of Trustees who are extremely active and meet on a weekly basis to discuss burning issues like corruption and communalism and take steps to ensure just and transparent implementation of the law.
The trustees are very accommodating and they encourage young people to take charge and contribute towards a better society.
I didn’t have a co-intern!
You have to do the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.
